Still Think Social Media is a Fad? [Infographic]

by on May 16, 2011

Here is a very nice infographic from InspiredMag detailing statistics about social media.

Personally, I have no doubt that social media is here to stay. What I can’t predict is how it will evolve–and it will!

I also wonder about the direction of education concerning social media. At this point it seems there is no middle ground, educators either love it or hate it. Ironically, and I’ve made this point before, Twitter seems to be the least embraced social media tool yet I view it as the most effective–especially for educators.

The other observation I’d like to make is that devices, social media, tech and so on is not necessary in order to live a nice life–yet! We all know people who have nothing to do with tech and don’t seem to miss it at all. Technology is advancing at such a rapid pace that it is only a matter of time before people will be forced to embrace these new technologies.

Finally, even though the infographic has a lot of great information, you must read the comment section to see how far society has to go before there is any consensus on the social media issue.

I do see people who are quite happy not using and relying on technology, but surely the point will arrive where social networking becomes so integrated with society and social norms that it will become a necessity. I’m sure when the telephone was first around there was sceptics who didn’t use it, but a phone has certainly become more than a norm, but a necessity these days. This will probably occur with social media and technology too. Those who aren’t comfortable will be forced to learn it or be left behind. But for those who struggle, there is help available.
