by on February 28, 2012

Privacy issues are a very hot topic for anyone using social media. As educators, I believe it is our responsibility to teach our students the ins and outs of how to responsibly use social media.

Just in the past few weeks very important issues concerning online privacy have surfaced and must be addressed. For instance, are you aware of Google’s new privacy policy? In addition, it has just been reported that Facebook is reading text messages of people who use their smartphone apps. Facebook has denied this accusation but how does this make you feel?

I recently wrote “Facebook Doesn’t Care One Bit About Your Reputation” with the intent being that even if you do all you can to protect your privacy, the use of social media is sometimes out of your control.

I believe social media is important for educators and students. But I also believe it must be used responsibly and that cannot be accomplished without knowing the intricacies of social media privacy. Take a look at this infographic from MDG about the sad state of social media privacy.
